Exhibition
The theme of the opening room of the Berlin exhibition follows the exhibition’s curatorial intent: “Berlin and its connections with the world”. The 360-degree artwork “Weltdenken” (“Thinking the World”) is the main feature of the entry hall and spreads over all four walls, each of which deals with a world view and history over the past 400 years with an astonishing amount of clear historical reference:
- the world view of expansion, which has characterised the world since the colonial conquests of the Portuguese and Spanish in the 15th and 16th centuries;
- the world view of a “divided world”, which characterised the colonial policies of the European powers in the 19th century and also the history of science and collecting in Berlin;
- the world view of a “networked world”, as epitomised by the Humboldt brothers;
- the world view of a “shared world”, which, with a post-colonial way of thinking, values what connects globally as well as what is special locally.

Yasha Young additionally curated the large scale steel sculpture titled “Overlords” by David Mesguich and DotDotDot that dominates the first exhibition hall with its ominous presence. The incredible sculpture is a historical reference of all cctv devices used in east and west from their first models to the now robotic and drone supervised world.
